Educated at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Jules Ober has brought her musical sensitivity into the visual world as an image-maker working between Australia & Europe across platforms as diverse as fine art printmaking, photography, film, design & multimedia production.
Since 2018 Jules has turned her creative energy to books, using a unique illustration method developed with her partner, Pierre-Jacques Ober in which she constructs and photographs miniature figurines.
Her first collaboration with Pierre-Jacques, The Good Son, has been hailed as ‘having the power of a timeless fable’ by The New York Times and has been awarded in France and the US. In Australia it has been shortlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of the Year and was the 2019 winner of the NSW Premier’s Young People’s History Prize. Their second children’s book, Jacqueline – a soldier’s daughter, was released at the end of 2021, has won the French Prix HiP for best children’s photo book and is one of the CBCA notables.
Rockpooling With Pup combines her skills as a photographer, her love of nature and concern for the environment. It is her first collaboration as co-author and illustrator with the poet, Kevin Brophy.
In Tarni’s Chance she has built and photographed a miniature Melbourne street for a story by author, Paul Collins.
